This 58’ wooden motor sailor had a recent refit and is ideal for small groups looking to explore the Mentawai and Telo Islands. She houses 7 guests in a dorm style cabin, complete with flat screen TV, fishing gear and all the navigation and safety gear you’d expect. Certainly good value, each guest has 5 complimentary beers each day.

Kuda Laut is a comfortable boat with friendly and helpful crew that will provide you good atmosphere along the trip. The Chef will satisfy you with delicious Indonesian and Western food. You also get free soft drinks to refresh you after chasing the waves and getting barreled.

The Kuda Laut is one of the original Mentawais surf boats; a 58 foot motor cruiser built with Sumatran Ironwood, she oozes character and the pioneering spirit. Forget about over-priced floating gin-palaces, if you want a real soul-surfing experience the Kuda Laut is the way to go. With over two decades of experience plying the warm waters of the Mentawais, the crew know exactly where to go to find the best and least crowded waves in every condition. Depending on swell conditions and charter exclusivity it’s also possible to explore further afield, and to hunt out long hollow tubes with empty line-ups in Nias, Telos, the Banyaks and more. The boat accommodates 7 people in comfortable bunks in a dorm-style cabin complete with flatscreen TV and DVD player. Communal areas and an upper-deck chill out area provide space to enjoy complimentary beers or fruit juices post-surf, whilst watching the sun set on another incredible Indian Ocean vista. If you need a rest from surfing during the day, extra activities like fishing can also be arranged. Packages are for 10/11 nights and are all inclusive. All interior areas, including the dormitory sleeping quarters, have air conditioning to escape the tropical sun. Most meals are usually served on the back deck but there is an interior saloon where meals can also be enjoyed, especially if there is a passing storm. The saloon also has a flat screen TV.

Although a relatively small vessel, she offers a good amount of space for it’s guests to enjoy a little privacy. Featuring 3 decks (1 front and 2 rear) – guests have shaded (and non shaded) areas to relax and watch the surf.

Boat Name Meaning
The name Minangkabau comes from the words Minang which means to win and Kabau which means buffalo. In a legend circulating, the history of the name Minangkabau originated from an expedition carried out by the Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. To prevent casualties, the local community proposed to pit their buffalo against the Javanese buffalo belonging to the Majapahit troops. At that time, the Majapahit troops were said to have brought a large and aggressive buffalo. While the local community only issued a hungry buffalo
calf. However, they put a knife on each horn of the calf.
As a result, the calf with a knife in its horn was able to defeat the large buffalo belonging to the Majapahit troops. The name Minangkabau then became famous due to the victory event
Therefore we took the word “buffalo” because the buffalo is a symbol of the
victory of West Sumatra. and Mentawai is one of the districts in West Sumatra which has some of the best waves in the world.

History of Boat
This ship was built in 2006 by “Edi Om” where he is one of pioners of the surf
charter business in the Mentawais. this ship is primerlary designed to charter
the Mentawai Ocean. and in 2019 a new hull was installed and in 2022 a full
refurbishment of the entire boat was carried out.

Switchfoot is a 52′ power catamaran that caters for up to 10 guests. Like Tengirri & Wild Cat, she’s one of the quicker boats operating in the Mentawai region (with day time cruising of 12 knots) offering comfortable sleeping quarters & ample space to relax in between surfs.

One of the newer vessels in the region, Switch Foot was built in 2017 & comes complete with all the mod cons and safety features you’d expect. She also boasts 4 private twin share sleeping cabins (plus 1 bunk room) for her guests, which means extra privacy & the promise of a quality nights sleep. Catamarans like Switchfoot are also more stable at night (than single hulls) meaning less swaying, less sea sickness and a better experience on board, especially when you’re trying to sleep! Mod cons include; flat screen TV, extensive range of movies, blue tooth stereo system, library with board games, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, medical kit, 2 tenders & 2 SUP’s. You can also expect three large and delicious meals served every day, as well complimentary snacks, tea, coffee and water.

One of the biggest draws of this impressive boat is her speed and safety. Day time cruising speeds will be in excess of 10-12 knots (the average for charter boats in the region are 7-8 knots). She can also reach a whopping 24 knots! The boat is fully equipped with satellite phone, lift rafts, GPS, radar, sounder, autopilot as well as all the latest safety & navigation specs you’d expect on a tier 1 charter boat.

The majority of trips will be to the Mentawai Islands, although surf trips further north to the Telo islands are also possible.

The interior provides a modern fully air conditioned saloon/dining area for those looking to cool off & escape the tropical sun, to watch a movie or read a book.

There are bigger surf charter boats than Switchfoot but she still offers an impressive 4 twin guest cabins (all with a/c) as well as 1 bunk room for 10 guests. Many of the boats operating in the region have fewer guest cabins which means less privacy and an increased chance of sharing with a resident snorer! It’s worth noting that cats are more stable than mono hulls, equating to less swaying when anchored, meaning that you’re also likely to get a better nights sleep! Each berth has a fan and a reading light too.

Like just about every mentawai boat trip, you’ll also be well fed aboard Switchfoot. Meals typically consist of Indonesian and Western cuisine. All are cooked by their experienced charter boat chef, Erik Wau, using the highest quality ingredients available. Expect plenty of healthy & delicious options including fresh fish, chicken, imported steak, and curries.
